U.S. Treasury Sanctions Burmese Militia Group Over Cyber Scams and Crypto Theft
The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Burma’s Karen National Army (KNA), accusing the militia group of harboring transnational criminal organizations involved in human trafficking, smuggling, and large-scale cyber fraud. The KNA-controlled border region has allegedly become a hub for illicit activities, including "pig butchering" scams that target U.S. citizens through fraudulent romantic schemes.
Authorities claim the KNA has retrofitted hotels and casinos to facilitate industrial-scale crypto thefts, resulting in billions of dollars in losses. The group’s ties to the Burmese military further complicate the geopolitical implications of the sanctions.
